PCs routinely end up on the short end of the stick. Sometimes, when it hits the fan, they are in their beloved light freighter or other means of intersteller transport. Those TIEs on their tail just got lucky. Green bolts slam through the shields and impact against the hull. The dice clatter and the chart tells you it's moderate damage. But what exactly happened? I ran across a handy "Technobabble Generator" in the Star Trek rpg rulebook put out by Last Unicorn Games. With this chart, you can now assign names to damage results. I encourage you to make a note of what part was damaged on what kind of roll and where the ship was hit. This way, the next time a TIE or a pirate hits them low and from the right scoring a moderate damage result, you can tell them, "Looks like the ionic induction equalizer just shorted out again..."
To use the table, you can pick a row and read straight across it, randomly pick one word from each column, or roll 2D6 to determine which lines to use. To extend the chart a little, you could also use words from just the first and last columns.
2 | quantum | flux | inhibitor |
3 | positronic | reaction | equalizer |
4 | gauss | field | dampener |
5 | osmotic | particle | chamber |
6 | neutrino | gradient | catalyst |
7 | molecular | induction | coil |
8 | resonating | conversion | unit |
9 | thermal | polarizing | translator |
10 | photon | displacement | grid |
11 | ionic | feed | regulator |
12 | multiphase | imaging | sustainer |
Some of the word combinations generated can get a bit on the "wonky" side of things, so be warned (c'mon, an "osmotic polarizing translator??). Also, you could replace words in the chart with new words of your own creation or taste.
